How to Clean Your Air Fryer (the Easy Way!)

If your air fryer's looking a little too loved lately (hello, greasy crumbs and that faint "what-was-that-last-week?" smell), it's time for a quick clean-up. The good news? It's actually super easy, no scrubbing marathons required. I clean mine after almost every use, and it still looks brand-new, even after all the chicken wings, veggie fries, and breakfast hash browns it's seen!

Why You Should Clean It Regularly

A dirty air fryer isn't just gross, it can actually affect how your food tastes and cooks. Built-up oil and crumbs can:

  • Create smoke or weird smells
  • Make your food soggy instead of crispy
  • Shorten the life of your appliance

Think of it like giving your air fryer a mini spa day. A quick 5-minute routine keeps it happy and performing like new.

What You'll Need

Here's what I use for an easy, safe clean-up:

  • Soft sponge or dishcloth
  • Warm, soapy water
  • Microfiber towel
  • Soft-bristle brush (for the basket holes)
  • Non-abrasive cleaner (like baking soda paste if there's gunk)
  • Dish soap, a degreasing one works best
Optional but awesome: a silicone liner to reduce future messes.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Air Fryer

1. Unplug and Cool It Down

Always start by unplugging your air fryer and letting it cool for at least 30 minutes. Safety first, hot oil and hands don't mix!

2. Remove the Basket and Tray

Take out the basket, tray, or drawer (depending on your model). These parts collect the most crumbs and grease.

3. Wash the Removable Parts

Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge. Avoid steel wool or anything abrasive, it can damage the non-stick coating.
If they're dishwasher-safe (check your manual), you can pop them in there for an easy wash.

4. Wipe Down the Inside

Use a damp cloth or sponge with a drop of dish soap to wipe the inside walls. Be gentle around the heating element, don't pour water inside.

5. Clean the Heating Element

Flip the air fryer upside-down (carefully!) and gently wipe the element with a damp cloth. If there's grease stuck, a bit of baking soda paste does wonders.

6. Wipe the Exterior

A quick once-over with a damp microfiber towel will make it shine. For fingerprints or grease, a drop of vinegar on the towel works magic.

7. Dry Completely

Use a dry towel or let the pieces air-dry before putting them back together. Moisture = bad news for electronics.

How Often Should You Clean Your Air Fryer?

  • Quick wipe: after every use
  • Deep clean: once a week if you use it daily
  • Heating element: once every 2-3 weeks

If you notice a burnt smell or smoke, it's your air fryer's way of begging for a cleaning.

Tips to Keep It Cleaner Longer

  • Use silicone or parchment liners to catch crumbs.
  • Don't overload the basket, more food = more splatter.
  • Empty the crumb tray often (if your model has one).
  • Avoid aerosol sprays, they damage the coating. Use a mister bottle instead!

My Favorite Air Fryer Cleaning Tools

These make cleaning faster and safer (and yes, they're all kitchen-mom-approved!):

  • Small silicone brush for tight corners
  • Reusable microfiber cloths
  • Fragrance-free dish soap (I like Attitude brand)
  • Silicone liners (way less scrubbing!)

FAQ

Can I use vinegar to clean my air fryer?

Yes! Mix equal parts vinegar and water for wiping down the inside or basket. Just don't soak the electrical parts.

Why does my air fryer smell bad even after cleaning?

Check under the heating element, old grease hides there! A baking soda paste usually fixes it.

Can I line the basket with foil?

Only if your manual says it's safe. Foil can block air circulation in some models.
